SONY playstation

TL;DR / Summary.

As a Mid-weight UI Designer at Domestic & General, I was regularly involved in design work for the company's high-profile brand partners alongside internal projects. The Register My PS4 project was one of the most significant of these; a collaboration between Domestic & General and Sony to create a subsidiary website within PlayStation's own domain, promoting a PS4 protection policy to existing console owners.

The site needed to be indistinguishable in look and feel from PlayStation's own website, requiring a thorough study of Sony's brand assets, typography, colour palette, imagery treatment, and signature design characteristics before a single screen was designed. Working across four pages; Home, Protection Policy, Make a Claim, and Contact Us, I applied PlayStation's visual language with precision, collaborating closely with the Content Team to ensure copy aligned with PlayStation's tone of voice and gaming themes.

Following internal approval across Content, Development, Legal, and UI teams, the designs were submitted to Sony for review. Their favourable response and sign-off confirmed the project was ready for development. After a thorough testing phase and front-end review, the Register My PS4 site launched successfully within PlayStation's domain, and the team well and truly levelled up.

The Brief.

Domestic & General partnered with Sony to offer a protection policy for PlayStation 4 owners. To promote the product, they launched the Register My PS4 project; a subsidiary website within the PlayStation domain where customers could learn about the policy, purchase cover, and make a claim should their console break down. The site had to be indistinguishable in look and feel from PlayStation's own website, ensuring a seamless user journey from the main PS4 site to the subsidiary one whilst maintaining full brand integrity.

Designed for both desktop and mobile, the site would consist of four pages; Home, Protection Policy, Make a Claim, and Contact Us. Given PlayStation's well-established and distinctive design language, including its three-column layouts, grid structures, signature iconography, and consistent visual treatments, the information hierarchy and layout patterns could be directly inherited from the existing PS4 site. This made the brief unusually well defined from the outset, with the primary challenge being one of precise brand replication and translation rather than ground-up design. Once requirements were validated, a project map was created and tasks were assigned across the relevant teams.

UI Design.

Although detailed wireframes were deprioritised given PlayStation's well-established design language, UX best practices were integrated throughout and helped guide design decisions. Before any conceptualisation began, I studied the PS4 site thoroughly at both a holistic and granular level; absorbing how elements were placed on the page, how typography was applied across titles and paragraphs, how the colour palette and imagery were treated, and understanding the subtler design characteristics such as the distinctive step technique used to separate page sections. Sony PlayStation's brand assets and style guide were also provided by the client, which I studied in conjunction with my own independent assessment of their website and applied faithfully throughout.

Working closely with the Senior Content Writer, we refined and condensed the business and legal requirements into tangible, user-friendly content that adhered to PlayStation's tone of voice and gaming themes. We reviewed where content would be placed across each page and considered how copy length could be managed within the constraints of the UI. Once the content was approved by the Legal Team, I incorporated the signed-off copy into the UI designs.

The homepage mirrored PlayStation's header styling with the addition of Domestic & General's logo, whilst the hero section incorporated Sony's supplied imagery within a step mask, paired with PlayStation-branded content containers, typography, gradients, and CTAs. The iconic △ O X □ symbols were placed between page sections with the intention of replicating Sony's symbol animation in development. A three-column layout beneath the hero highlighted the three supporting pages, using PS4 iconography and shadow effects. The footer housed Domestic & General's legal content and links whilst maintaining PlayStation's colour palette and aesthetic.

The remaining pages followed a similar structure; PlayStation-style hero sections, product imagery cut-outs supporting relevant content, and alternating layouts inspired by PS4's grid system. The Protection Policy page showcased user benefits using PS4-styled iconography, the Contact Us page incorporated accordions to progressively reveal information across the various contact methods, and the Make a Claim page featured a full-width banner alongside a dedicated section outlining the claims journey through iconography and content.

Once the initial desktop and mobile designs were complete, a review session was held with the Content, Development, Legal, and other UI designers in the team. Rationales were presented, feedback was gathered, and a Q&A session followed. After revisions, all teams provided their approval and the designs were submitted to Sony. Their favourable response and sign-off confirmed the project was ready to move into development.

Development.

The approved UI designs were uploaded to Invision for the Development Team to access and inspect the styling properties. All assets were prepared and handed over in full; background imagery and product cut-outs in high-resolution JPG and PNG formats, icons as SVGs, and the PlayStation typefaces for implementation. I demonstrated the expected behaviours for key interactions, including the animated △ O X □ symbols by referencing how they operated on Sony's own site, alongside the accordions, hover states, and hero carousel. Throughout development I acted as a UI consultant, answering questions and providing further guidance as components were built.

Once development was complete, the Testing Team examined the site for functional, usability, and behavioural issues across the user journeys. In parallel, I conducted a front-end review as a means of quality control, identifying and communicating any discrepancies between the coded interface and the approved UI designs to the Development Team for resolution.

With all refinements in place, the completed site was submitted to Sony for final approval. Their sign-off confirmed the Register My PS4 site was ready for launch; a fitting conclusion to a project that had demanded precision, collaboration, and no small amount of brand detective work.
